Permanent repairs of steel pipes in operation with the help of sleeves and wraps
The article deals with the issues of repairing defects in steel pipes (for example, in gas pipelines), in particular from the perspective of permanent repairs. A large majority of defects can be repaired without interrupting pipeline operation when the technology of sleeves and wraps, a description of which forms the core of the article, is used.
The authors specify the conditions under which sleeves and wraps can be applied in pipeline repairs. They go on to discuss the use of steel repair sleeves, which offer a load carrying capability comparable with that of defect-free pipes, and therefore are particularly interesting for pipeline operators, and also the use of composite sleeves, based on e-glass and resin composite and high-strength filler material, and composite wraps (ClockSpring® and T. D. Williamson’s BlackDiamond™ systems).
